Our Thoughts

Food: 9.2/10
Service: 8.6/10
Ambience|Decor: 7.7/10
Total: 8.5/10

I’ll start off by saying that Hoja Santa was one of the culinary highlights of our trip…and our Barcelona trip was an EPIC journey of gastronomic proportions. (Seriously, I have never EVER had so many hits rather than misses on a single trip before!)

It’s Mexican food meets Molecular Gastronomy meets fun funky fusion. I mean, a caesar salad in the form of a one-bite appetizer using fried chicken skin? Corn ice cream IN THE SHAPE OF ACTUAL CORN? I’m so done.

You can either choose the tasting menu or order a la carte. We usually order a la carte unless they don’t give us a choice. We visited Barcelona in May so I assume our menu was the Spring edition. If you do a google search now you’ll most likely see their Autumn menu.

What I loved about Hoja Santa (besides all the mind-blowing dishes) was the generosity. You sit down, you get serviced with this strange wooden sculpture carrying fried plantains and green leaves served with a dip and pickles. You finish your meal and you get serviced with desserts like rock chocolates.

All I can say is, the avocado gazpacho was the best recreation of a gazpacho I’ve ever experienced. It was slightly salty, and so creamy, so smooth. When the server brought our ceviche, he used his spoon to crack the frozen surface so that it broke like ice. He did it so quick I couldn’t tell him to let me take a video!

Overall, food was OUT OF THIS FREAKING WORLD. Service was informative and polite but nothing memorable. The decor is cosy, using a variety of hues and textures. Not quite what you would expect at a fine dining establishment but I liked that it was different. Please, take it upon yourself to visit Hoja Santa if you’re ever in Barcelona…and then tag me in all your photos so I can drool along with you!
