Salt Dubai

I remember when SALT was just a small “airstream kiosk” and you had to regularly check their twitter account to know if they were open for business that day. This was before they became a permanent fixture at Kite Beach. And my, oh my! They’ve certainly come a long, long way mashaAllah 🙂 I’m proud of the two founders, they pursued their dreams and found great success.

Sadly, their Wagyu Cheeseburgers and Cheetos Chicken Cheeseburgers failed to sweep me off my feet. I appreciate that their beef patties are freshly ground and hand-formed, and that their chicken patties are coated in crushed Cheetos, but honestly all I could taste was…well, salt. (Oh, the irony.) Like when you accidentally swallow a big gulp of sea water, or when you accidentally spoon salt instead of sugar into your cup of coffee. Quite unpleasant.

Luckily, its one saving grace is Lotus. That is, their Lotus Soft Serve and Lotus Milkshake! OMGGGG. Every time I visit Dubai, I have to get my Lotus fix at Salt at least once or I’ll kick myself in the shin!

My foodie senses are tingling, and its telling me you’ll fall head over heels in love with them too. 😉

Our Thoughts

Ambience|Decor: 7.5/10
Total: 8.6/10

If you ask anyone who’s ever dined at LPM (that’s what us cool kids call “La Petite Maison”…ha!) how their experience was, you’ll hear words like “unbeatable” “orgasmic” “highly recommended” and, my personal favourite, “you’ve lived this long and you haven’t tried it yet? What’s wrong wit’chu?!?!”. Basically, you’ll only hear good things.

We’ve tried burrata in Spain, Canada, and one other country I forget (yeah, you can tell how memorable that burrata was…lol) but nothing — NOTHING beats the burrata we tried at La Petite Maison. I mean, we don’t just throw three ♥s at every Dick, Tom and Jerry. The dish has to earn it. It has to make our heart skip five beats, maybe ten. What I’m trying to say is…oh my goshhhh just ORDER THIS!

The escargots are Nasser’s personal favourite. I’m not usually one for snails, but yeah, they were pretty scrumptious. As for our entrees, we recommend the lamb cutlets but not the pan fried cod. The cod was incredibly fresh and high in quality, but the taste was so flat, so boring. Glazed baby carrots are a pass, and you can skip the warm chocolate mousse as well (I rather have a rich velvety and chilled chocolate mousse or a warm oozing fondant au chocolat than this strange lovechild hybrid).

Okay but oh my Gaaaaaaaawd, the creme brûlée. The CREME BRULEE. I can’t even type out the words. There are no words. Just, please, do yourself a favour (and let go of any misgivings you may have for all the second rate creme brûlée’s you’ve tried up until now) and ORDER THIS! …I feel like I’ve said this before somewhere else…

Our total bill, including service charge, came to about 950 dirhams (that’s USD $260 for all you dollar folks out there). Worth every penny, dirham, calorie and extra week at the gym. The only question that remains is..when are we going back?

Okay, if I’m laying all my cards on the table, then here’s the truth…instagram made me do it. LOL. One look at the za’atar waffle with foul medames and sausage on the photo app and I was a goner. Plus, chai karak? View of the Burj Khalifa next door? Uhhh, why aren’t we there already?

We started off the meal with, appropriately, a glass of creamy and flavourful karak. It possessed notes of saffron — and I could see the threads floating on top! Ya’ll don’t understand my mad undying LOVE for saffron. It’s so mad it should go to anger management. (This is why you don’t see me opening for Russell Peters, people.) So, sure, Karak House gets my blessing for decent chai karak. That’s the least they can do if they’re going to name the restaurant after a drink…y’know, BE GOOD AT IT.

Service was on par with what you’d get at a cafeteria but not a restaurant situated on Emaar Boulevard. You order your food, they bring it to you, and that’s that. Straight forward, no frills. If not for their gracious acceptance of Nasser’s request for a plain omelette, which was not listed on the menu, I would have scored them lower. I hope you savoured your omelette, Nasser.

The shakshuka and foul medames waffle were…good. You’ll definitely find better elsewhere in the city, or even in your own home kitchen if you’re cooking-inclined. But nothing to spend more than two or three sentences writing about on a blog. I usually love to be longwinded and describe the explosion of tastes blah blah blah but not this time.

Go for the view, go for the open bay windows, go for the relative quiet. But if you’re going out of your way for the karak…it was yummy. But you can find that on the roadside of Sheikh Zayed Road or whip up a batch at home that’s just as good. And the waffles? They looked better than they tasted.

What can I say about Junoon that hasn’t been said already?

Junoon is a Michelin-starred, contemporary Indian restaurant from New York City that offers pretty innovative dishes like the Eggplant Chaat, which pairs crispy eggplant with tamarind chutney and chaat masala, and chocolate FALOODA matka, highlighting notes of saffron, redcurrant jelly, and rose. Like holy fudge on a stick. How good does that sound?

Restaurateur Rajesh Bhardwaj’s food is just exciting to eat! I’ll be honest though, guys, the Murgh Lababdar was quite disappointing — I didn’t quite take to its texture, flavour combination and look. And we found the distinct taste of the goat in the Bhut Jolokia dish too overwhelming. But hey, 5 out of 7? That’s a damn fine turn out.

Junoon offers a weekly lunch set: two dishes for AED 90 and three dishes for AED 110, but that doesn’t include drinks. Still a steal, especially if you compare it to the prices on the a la carte menu! Either way, you’ll be hard pressed to find the menu lacking. I hope you give this place a try…their appetizers and desserts are particularly pleasing to the palette!
